Scriptural Reflection from the Bishop - Twenty Third Sunday of the Year (C)

The fresh debate sparked by Professor by Professor Stephen Hawking’s conclusion that we do not need God to explain the world makes timely this Sunday’s first reading from the book of Wisdom. The sacred author speaks of another kind of knowledge, what he calls wisdom, which God alone can give. It was this wisdom, in truth the gift of the Holy Spirit which the Lord God poured out on the people of Israel, and does now on the Church, the new Israel. The findings and conclusions of science have their own legitimacy and are to be respected, but faith adds an indispensable dimension and purpose to our lives which despite its brilliance modern science is unable to do.

The touching extract from Paul’s short letter to Philemon about the return of a runaway slave shows the Apostle at his most tender and humane. He urges Philemon to welcome back with kindness Onesimus, not now as a slave but as a brother in the Lord. The outstanding theologian Paul applies his great learning to a particular case, and stresses to his friend the need to forgive others and make a fresh start. This is an instructive reading for all of us.

The Gospel reminds us, lest we should forget, that the cross of Christ is unavoidable if we wish to belong to Christ. Each day every believer, whatever their individual situation, is called upon to make a decision for the Lord. To follow Christ and bear the name of Christian is never an easy option. Christ lived throughout his public ministry, and even earlier, under the shadow of the cross. There is the constant temptation to water down the teaching and example of the Master and settle for a comfortable and undemanding Catholicism. The long tradition of martyrdom from the earliest days of the Church, and the rich history of the Lancashire and Cumbrian martyrs, should alert us to the possible and at times ultimate cost of Christian discipleship.

The Lord in the Gospel today invites us to take careful stock of what is involved in being his disciple. When we were baptised, the apostle Paul teaches us, we were baptised into Christ’s death and mysteriously crucified with him on the cross. To be a Catholic and a Christian is both a joy and a privilege, but it can also be costly.

WE WELCOME INTO THE FAMILY OF THE CHURCH
Charlie James Parker whose Baptism takes place this Sunday.

A BIG THANK YOU
for your generosity in the Pakistan Flood Appeal recently. This has been sent through to CAFOD, which is one of the key agencies working on the ground in Pakistan. They are very appreciative of your great kindness.
CAFOD themselves have written: “Over 14 million people have been affected by this terrible flood, and many of them are homeless. Food and water are in short supply, and the spread of disease, especially cholera, is a very real fear. It is vital we get urgent supplies such as temporary food, water and cooking materials to the region immediately. We know that you will be concerned about the people affected by the disaster. CAFOD is working alongside 12 other aid agencies, and because the need it so urgent we are asking you to give whatever you can.”

CAFOD
Please continue to take a CAFOD envelope.
Please try and support CAFOD when every you can.

We remember in our Prayers

THE CENACOLO COMMUNITY
is a house for people who have turned to the Church to help them overcome drug addiction. The organisation was started in 1983 by Sister Elvira in Italy, and has a 90% success rate. There are 62 Houses throughout the world, one of which is in our own Diocese, at Dodding Green near Kendal. They were also amazed at all the generous donations of food which has been handed in by parishioners, and which has now been delivered to them. The Community, living at Dodding Green near Kendal, are a group of men and women trying to overcome drug and alcohol addiction, supported by the church and, now, our parishioners. As previously announced, your kind contributions will be taken to Kendal by Carolyn once a fortnight. Besides foodstuffs like pasta and tinned goods, they would also be very grateful for any toileteries. There is a box for these things left at the back of church.
The people who live in these houses usually stay for 2-3 years, and try to be self-supportive, after trusting in God’s Providence, and the kindness of others. At Dodding Green each person is given a job to do, including craft work, and building work around the property to support the hen-coops and pig-sties. However, they still need our help with food for their survival. They pray for these things daily. But if you can help in any way to fulfil hopes and their prayers, with foodstuffs like pasta, tinned goods, packets of tea or coffee etc, then everything will be received with great gratitude.

Parish Committee's
Help always required for events- If you are able to help please contact church.

MASS TIMES
PLEASE REMEMBER: On Sunday, 19 September there is no 9 am Mass. Masses that weekend are: Saturday, 6.30 pm, Sunday, 10.30 am.
The Bishop has requested that the churches in each Deanery should change their Mass times, so that if a priest is away, for example due to sickness or holiday, one of our own Deanery priests should stand in for him and still celebrate his own Parish Masses. Having consulted with the priests of our Deanery, an interim decision has ben made, that if a priest is away, then the weekend Mass times will be changed to accommodate the Deanery priest who will be saying Mass for him. Obviously, this will need your patience and understanding, but with holiday times, notice will be given in advance.

PLEASE KEEP IN PRAYER:
As our summer has recently begun to heat up, please keep in mind those for whom the heat is a hard burden to bear. Among them please remember Fr Eena and his parishioners in the middle of India, who have had to contend with drought and blazing temperatures for many weeks now. Fr Eena has been here to St Teresa’s. This parish financially supported him in his education for the Priesthood, and he has never forgotten your kindness. Dorothea is still regularly in contact with Fr Eena, and has informed us of his desperate situation.

THE PARISH SOCIAL COMMITTEE
Due to changed circumstances, unfortunately our hopes and plans for The Children’s Centre being built in our Parish Hall have now been cancelled. A final decision by Blackpool Borough Council was delayed until after the General Election, and now with changed economic circumstances for all Councils, the Children’s Centre will not be created here but probably in some already existing council property.
We are very conscious of all the hard work, and many hours of meetings, in which some of our parishioners have been involved over the past eighteen months, to prepare for this scheme, including our Headteacher, Mrs Liz Yates. But our special thanks go to Suzanne Pinkett who has worked tirelessly to try to fulfil our Parish Dream.
However, it is still our mission to reach out to the local community, and we will continue to explore ways to achieve this. Already this summer there has been a Holiday Club for children with special needs, and their families. And we still hope to set up before long a Youth Club, as planned. The rooms at the stage end of the Hall are being developed for this.

If you wish to join us on the Committee if you can help in any way to support the social activities of the Parish, or have any new ideas please contact Church.

ST TERESA’S PASTORAL VISITING GROUP
“Gifted by the Spirit, St Teresa’s will be a living, Christ-centred community of worship, witness and service to all.” This Vision Statement, agreed at a Parish meeting three years ago, reminds us of our Mission as a Parish Community. We come together at Mass to share in the Eucharist and to be strengthened for these tasks, but there are many who, by virtue of sickness or disability, are unable to be present with us and can feel isolated and forgotten. They need to feel they still belong and that the Parish still cares. Of course we all must help where possible and excellent work is already undertaken by the SVP and by the Special Ministers of the Eucharist, but Parish meetings have highlighted a need for further support. “Offering My Time and Gifts” produced a group of volunteers who by reason of work or family obligations, can make only a limited commitment to this work, but are willing to share the responsibility as part of a group. The Aim of the Group is to visit and give each person a sense that, within the Parish community they are known, respected and valued even if they are unable to attend Mass or other activities, and to befriend and give caring support as required. As Parish representatives, volunteers will visit the sick, housebound and those in hospital upon request and by prior arrangement. They will keep people in touch with Parish news and supply them with the Parish Bulletin on visiting, and they will emphasise how much their prayers can help the Parish community and that they can indeed be a “powerhouse of prayer”. Please make requests for visits to the Coordinator, Max Romer, Tel: 853095

St Teresa's Visiting Group

I felt very fortunate to live in this part of the world. I promise I will never waste my food no matter how bad it can taste and how full I may be. I promise not to waste water. I pray that this little boy be alleviated from his suffering.

Sunday Gospel

Luke 14:25-33
Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. If any man comes to me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
‘And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, “‘ Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish.”
Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.’
